The camera

So uhm. Look I hate to be all complete consumerist prat but well, in our sad and pathetic existence one of the more exciting recent events was the arrival of our new camera.. a while ago now, but still dead exciting.

Its a canon powershot g7 which I’d describe as ‘defiantly not an SLR’ - the idea was to get a good digital compact instead of a chromatically challenged low end digital SLR. And after a few days I’m very very very happy with the choice. Apart from the fact that it actually takes nice photos with ease (just, you know, they *look* good) it also provides me with (a) the impression that I’m back to our old fully manual (film based) Ricoh, which was always our favorite and (b) hours and hours of fun playing with all the settings. That Ricoh took a lot of out-of-focus, or undexposed pics but also, occasionally the best pics I’ve ever taken. So hopefully it will be like that. Lots of fun. BTW the cheesy pic at the top of this page was taken with this camera.

One of the main motivations was that I wanted to play with HDR (high dynamic range) photography which is where you mix up pictures taken at different exposure levels.

Here’s my first attempt at an HDR pic. you may want to compare and contrast with a ‘normal’ pic.

I think I prefer the ‘regular’ photo - don’t you?

Here’s a bunch more photos that exemplify my playind around with the thing. Compared to our old ‘camera’ (actually it was an oldish digitial handycam with ’snapshot function’) well all the photos are about one million percent better. Someone who actually knew what they were doing could do some serious damage with this camera I think.
